Flood Preparedness for Guadalupe River Communities

Know Your Risk

The Guadalupe and Comal Rivers are beautiful assets to our region, but they also pose a flood risk — especially during spring storms and reservoir releases. Homes and businesses near the rivers in New Braunfels, Seguin, and San Marcos should prepare for potential inundation.

Preparation Steps

• Understand your flood zone via FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).
• Purchase flood insurance — standard policies do not cover flood damage, and there's a 30-day waiting period.
• Elevate critical systems — HVAC, water heaters, and electrical panels above potential flood levels.
• Create an emergency plan with evacuation routes and a documents/supplies kit.

During a Flood Event

• Heed evacuation orders. Six inches of moving water can sweep away a vehicle.
• Shut off utilities if it's safe to do so.
• Avoid contaminated water — floodwaters often carry sewage, chemicals, and debris.

After the Flood
